River Brown Bio

River Brown is a 9-year-old violinist studying with Hirono Oka, of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She also occasionally travels to study with Brian Lewis, of the University of Texas at Austin. River began her musical studies with Shelley Beard Santore through the Music School of Delaware Suzuki Academy and currently participates in the Temple University Center for Gifted Young Musicians (CGYM) where she is a member of the Baroque Players orchestra directed by Aaron Picht. She was excited to debut as a soloist with orchestra twice this fall: first with the Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, and then with the St. Antoine Ensemble at the International Dusseldorf Organ (IDO) Festival.

In early years, River regularly attended the Ithaca College Suzuki Institute where she received instruction from renowned pedagogues such as Teri Einfeldt. This year, she participated in the Flow Music Leadership Academy, where she received a merit scholarship to study Carolina Philharmonic Conductor David Michael Wolff, and the Heifetz International Music Institute, where she studied with Caeli Smith.

River has won top prizes in international classical music competitions including American Protégé, Beethoven Young Musicians, Carl Reinecke Competition, Camerata, Charleston Music Competition, France Music, Grand Prize Virtuoso, London Young Musician, New York Young Virtuoso, Nouvelles Étoile, Opus, Prima Volta, the UK Elizabeth Competition, for which she won a special prize for Iconic Performance, and the Vivaldi Competition, in which she received a Nomination for Excellence. Most recently, she was the Gold Prize Winner of the European Virtuoso Competition, and the Platinum Prize Winner of the Erik Satie International Music Competition, for which she won a special prize for Excellent Technique. As a result of competition wins, she has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and London’s Royal Albert Hall.

River enjoys traditional fiddle and is the 2025 old time youth fiddle champion of the oldest and largest fiddlers’ convention in Galax, Virginia, where she also has placed in the adult old time fiddle competition, and won the Don Wilson Memorial Scholarship. River additionally has won top prizes in Pennsylvania and Maryland championships, including first place for her age group at the Berks Fiddle Festival, and first place in both youth and adult contests for the Berlin Fiddlers Convention.

River regularly performs with her brother, Max, and the duo have been featured at the Berlin Fiddlers’ Convention, Dave Kline’s Mountain Folk Stage at the Berks Fiddle Festival, the Fresh Fest stage of the Kutztown Folk Festival, the Main Stage of the Waterford Fair and the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival, and several Kutztown Folk Music Society concerts. River plays fiddle for The Ragged Edge and enjoys performing with this band at the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention. She also collaborated with her brother on an album titled, “Max and River Brown: Lockdown,” which featured live performances from the COVID-19 quarantine. 

When she is not playing the violin, River often can be found reading, drawing, playing pretend, climbing trees, horseback riding, learning about science, math, and dragons, and enjoying time with her family and friends.
